Firewall Protection

One of the best things you can do to protect your computer is to run a router between you and the internet that uses NAT firewall software. Most all of the routers sold do so you should be ok.

The next layer of protection would be a personal firewall installed on your computer. This acts as a port block to deter malicious entry through open ports while blocking outgoing requests from any apps that happen to sneak thin. In other words if you get a worm through an email attachment or a spyware app from a web page, the firewall will block the outgoing requests it might make to download other components.
